Houston Attic Rodent Cleanup That Keeps the Next Rat Out

Houston’s roof rats climb oak and pecan limbs straight to your roofline, then slip in through soffit gaps, roof returns and AC line openings. Trapping stops the scratching. The droppings, urine-soaked insulation and chewed ductwork stay behind, and Gulf Coast humidity keeps that odor strong enough to draw the next one in. We clear it out, sanitize the attic and seal every way in.

  • ✓Soiled insulation and nests bagged under containment, so debris stays out of your living space
  • ✓Attic ductwork inspected for chew damage, so your AC isn't pulling air past droppings
  • ✓Entry points at soffits, vents and roof returns sealed after cleanup, not before

Why the Smell Stays After the Rats Are Gone

What Rodents Leave Behind in Houston Attics

The scratching stops once the trapper is done, but many Houston homeowners still notice a sour smell weeks later. That smell comes from what the rats left behind: droppings, urine-soaked insulation, shredded nesting material and a scent trail along the rafters. Houston attics can top 130°F in summer, and that heat, plus Gulf Coast humidity, keeps the odor strong. The next rat moving along your roofline can pick up the trail.

The problem is worst in neighborhoods with mature trees and older rooflines. Oak and pecan limbs over roofs in The Heights, Oak Forest, Meyerland and Spring Branch give roof rats an easy bridge to soffit gaps and roof returns. Once inside, they often nest right on your attic ductwork. They can chew through flex duct and let your AC pull contaminated attic air into the house.

Our cleanup handles all of it. We bag contaminated [attic insulation](link to Attic Cleaning page) and nesting under containment, then treat the attic floor and framing with EPA-registered sanitizers. We check your ducts for chew damage and seal the entry points at rooflines, soffits, plumbing vents and gable vents. If your ductwork was affected, we can clean it too with our [air duct cleaning service](link to Air Duct Cleaning page).

Rats still active up there? We’re a cleaning and remediation company, not a trapper. Removal has to happen first, and we’ll tell you honestly if it hasn’t.

Still Smell It After the Trapper Left?

6 Signs Your Houston Attic Needs Rodent Cleanup

The rats can be gone for weeks while the mess they left keeps working on your home. In Houston’s heat and humidity, these are the signs it’s time to clean the attic out, not just set another trap.

Droppings Along Joists or on Stored Boxes

Rats use the same routes over and over, so droppings pile up along joists and on anything stored up there, like holiday decorations and old paperwork. Droppings mean contamination, whether anything still lives there or not.

An Ammonia Smell Near Ceiling Vents

Urine soaks into insulation, and Houston’s attic heat keeps baking that odor out of it. If the smell gets stronger when your AC kicks on, and in Houston that’s most of the year, attic air is getting into your ductwork.

Shredded Insulation Piled in One Spot

Torn insulation, paper or fabric gathered in a corner is a nest. It means rats settled in instead of passing through, usually as Houston nights cool in the fall. Expect heavier contamination around it.

Chewed Wiring or Gnawed Wood at the Roofline

Roof rats gnaw where oak and pecan limbs meet your roof, working on wood, wiring and vent screens. Have chewed wiring checked by a licensed electrician right away. We’ll handle the cleanup and seal the entry.

Stains or Sagging Spots on the Ceiling

Yellow-brown stains or soft spots on ceiling drywall can mean urine has soaked through the insulation. In Houston’s humidity, that moisture can also feed mold on the attic side.

They Came Back When the Weather Cooled

A repeat infestation around October or November almost always means the entry points were never sealed and the scent trail was never cleaned. The next rat just followed the same path in.

Our Process

How We Handle It

01
Inspection and entry-point mapping
We photograph the contamination and trace how they are getting in — roofline gaps, soffit returns, gable vents, plumbing and cable penetrations. You see the photos before we quote.
02
Containment and removal
Contaminated insulation, nesting and droppings are removed under containment through sealed hoses, with the crew in appropriate PPE. This material is not swept — disturbing it dry is exactly what makes it airborne.
03
Sanitizing and deodorizing
The deck, joists and framing are treated with EPA-registered antimicrobial products, then deodorized to break down the pheromone trail that attracts the next animal.
04
Exclusion — sealing the way in
Gaps are sealed with steel mesh, hardware cloth and sealant at the structural level. Rodents chew through foam and plastic, so those are not used as a barrier.
05
Re-insulate and document
Once the space is clean and sealed we can re-insulate to proper depth. You receive before-and-after photos and a written scope — useful for insurance and at resale.

Amazing service and Mori was the guy! It is a pleasure to be served by such professionals. I was going to get three bids and they were the second one I called. They asked when they could come and do they estimate and I said how about right now. Even though it was Saturday they came right out and Mori and his team did a very through evaluation and explained in detail what they would do. I asked when they could do the work, and they said can we do it now? I decided not to pursue the other two bids, and to my surprise they had the equipment and crew there and did the job all in the same day! It is a pleasure doing business with people like this. 5 stars all the way. We had a pretty neglected system that clearly hadn’t been cleaned in a long time (if EVER!!!), and these guys did an awesome job getting everything back in shape. Omri was the lead on our crew and he was fantastic. Very professional, super knowledgeable, and took the time to walk me through everything they were doing. You could tell they really cared about doing it right. No pressure, no upsells. Just solid, honest work. Highly recommend if your system needs a deep clean.

Thanks for the quick turnaround work. My AC and furnace unit was pretty dirty as previous tenant was very messy. Plus he had smoked inside house causing cigarette odor to contaminate unit. Crew came out and did a thorough clean up over a a span of 3-4hours. Before and after photos were night and day difference. Update: Company charges extra for use of credit card which was an additional $75.80 with final bill $1970.80. Attempting to pay with the credit card initially failed. Thinking there may be issue with card I used another card. Later I came to realize that I was double charged on two different credit card; however, what annoyed me was somehow the first bill was lot higher than anticipated ($1,989.75). Now I have to go fight to get the extra charge removed. While the work is commendable, the billing practice is questionable. Update: Jasmine was great to follow up on this issue and was able to get the extraneous charge reversed.

Houston Attic Rodent Cleanup FAQs: Health, Ductwork, Mold and More

Are rat droppings in my attic a health risk?

Yes. Rodent droppings, urine and nesting can carry bacteria and viruses. Sweeping or vacuuming them dry sends particles into the air. The CDC recommends wetting droppings with disinfectant before removing them. In a Houston attic that can top 130°F in summer, dried droppings crumble easily and can drift through gaps and ductwork into your living space.

A few scattered droppings can be handled with gloves, a respirator and disinfectant. Soaked insulation, nests or droppings along several joists are a different job. Houston attic heat also makes long cleanup sessions a real heat exhaustion risk. We bag contaminated material under containment so nothing spreads into the house.

Activity climbs as nights cool, usually from October through winter, when roof rats look for warm shelter. Houston's mild winters mean they can stay active well into spring. If you hear scratching in the fall, check the attic before the problem grows.

Roof rats climb oak and pecan limbs, fences and utility lines to reach your roof. From there, they slip through gaps at roof returns, soffits, gable vents, plumbing vent pipes, AC line openings and dryer vent caps. A gap about the size of a quarter is enough. Trimming limbs back from your roofline helps cut off the easiest route.

No. We close rodent gaps without blocking the soffit, ridge and gable vents your attic needs to release heat, which matters in Houston summers. If we find rotted decking or fascia, we'll show you so a roofer can repair it before we seal.

Most of the odor drops once soaked insulation and nests are removed and the attic is sanitized. A faint smell can hang on for a few days, longer during humid stretches. If the smell is still strongest at your vents, your ductwork may be contaminated too.

Not always. We remove the contaminated sections. If droppings and urine have spread across most of the attic, full removal is the cleaner option. Replacing what's removed is worth planning for in Houston, since attic insulation has a big effect on how hard your AC works.

No. We handle cleanup, sanitizing and sealing. If rats are still active, a trapper needs to finish first, and we're happy to schedule our work right after. We'll tell you honestly if the attic still looks occupied.

Many policies exclude rodent damage as a maintenance issue, but coverage varies. Check your policy or ask your agent before the work starts.

Yes. Most Houston homes have the air handler and ductwork in the attic, right where rats nest. Chewed flex duct or gaps at the return plenum let your AC pull attic air, and whatever's in it, into your rooms. Our Air Duct Cleaning removes that debris from the system.

If the smell is strongest at your vents, if ducts were chewed, or if there were droppings near the air handler, yes. The order matters: clean the attic and repair damaged duct sections first, then clean the ducts, so they don't get recontaminated.

It can. Nesting and droppings near the air handler can land on the coil and in the drain pan. Houston ACs run most of the year, and a damp coil holds onto debris, which cuts airflow and causes odors. AC Coil & System Cleaning clears it and helps your system cool efficiently again.

Yes, especially in Houston. Urine-soaked insulation holds moisture, and chewed duct leaks let cold air meet humid attic air, so ducts and framing start to sweat. Both give mold a place to grow. Our Mold Remediation service treats affected attic framing, decking and drywall.

Mold remediation treats your home's structure, like attic framing, decking and ceiling drywall. HVAC Mold Removal targets mold inside the system itself: the air handler, coil, drain pan and ductwork. After rodent damage in a humid Houston attic, some homes need both.

Yes. Roof-exit and upper-wall dryer vents are common on Houston's two-story homes and townhomes, and a damaged or missing vent cap is an open door. A nest mixed with lint blocks airflow, makes drying take longer and creates a fire risk. Dryer Vent Cleaning clears the line, and we'll let you know if the cap needs replacing.

Our Attic Cleaning service also handles old or damaged insulation, debris and cleanup after roof leaks or storm damage, a common need in Houston after heavy rain and hurricane season.

It depends on the size of your attic and how far the contamination has spread. We'll give you a time estimate after we inspect.
