★★★★★ Attic Insulation Built for Houston's Zone 2A Heat

Houston Attic Insulation Replacement, Made for 150°F Summer Attics

In August, a Houston attic can pass 150°F. Flattened 1970s batts, Harvey-era water stains, and roof-rat nests let that heat pour straight into your living room. We pull out the old material, clean and dry the deck, then blow in fresh insulation to a measured depth. Your AC runs less, and your summer electric bill finally gets a break.

  • ✓Old, damp, or rodent-soiled insulation is vacuumed out and bagged, not buried under new material
  • ✓New insulation is blown in to R-38 or higher, measured for Houston's hot, humid Zone 2A climate

INSIDE A HOUSTON ATTIC

How Much Attic Insulation Does a Houston Home Need?

Houston sits in Climate Zone 2A, the hot, humid Gulf Coast band. For an uninsulated attic here, ENERGY STAR recommends R-49, or R-38 if you’re adding to 3–4 inches already in place. The 2021 energy code sets R-49 for new homes. Most attics we inspect fall short for a few common reasons:

  • The home was built long before today’s code, like many 1950s and ’60s ranches in Oak Forest, Sharpstown, and Spring Branch.
  • Years of Gulf humidity have matted the insulation down.
  • Roof leaks during Harvey soaked it.
  • A cable, HVAC, or plumbing crew pushed it aside and never put it back.

Insulation pays off faster in Houston than in milder climates. On an August afternoon, your attic can hit 130°F to 150°F, and it sits directly on top of your ceiling drywall. Every degree that gets through is heat your AC has to remove again during the hottest hours of the day, when your system is already working hardest.

We clean the attic deck first, then blow in insulation to a measured, marked depth, not a guess. Before we cover anything, we point out the problems new insulation would hide:

  • Air leaks around can lights and the attic hatch
  • Disconnected or crushed ducts
  • Bath fans venting into the attic instead of outside

In Houston’s humidity, a bath fan dumping moist air into insulation is a fast route to mold. Burying these problems is the most common reason a new insulation job still fails to lower a bill.

BEFORE YOUR NEXT SUMMER BILL

Is Your Houston Attic Under-Insulated? Watch for These Signs

Spot one of these, and an attic inspection is worth it. Spot two or more, and your insulation is likely well short of the R-49 that Houston’s Zone 2A climate calls for. That’s especially true if your AC runs nonstop from June through September.

Upstairs Rooms Never Match the Thermostat

Your thermostat is set to 74, but the upstairs bedrooms sit at 79 on summer afternoons. In Houston two-story homes, that gap often points to thin insulation over the second floor rather than a failing AC. A full blown-in install evens it out.

Summer Electric Bills Keep Climbing

Settled insulation loses R-value slowly, so energy use creeps up instead of jumping. Compare your August kilowatt-hours to the same month three years ago. Use kWh, not dollars, because Houston’s retail electricity rates change every time you renew a plan.

Your AC Barely Shuts Off in July and August

When Houston afternoons hit the mid-90s, an under-insulated attic can climb past 140°F and push that heat through your ceiling. If your system runs nonstop and still can’t reach the set temperature, it may be fighting the attic rather than breaking down.

Ceiling Joists Poke Above the Insulation

Open your attic hatch and look across. If you can see the tops of the joists, you have less than the 14 or more inches of blown insulation it takes to reach R-49, the level DOE recommends for Houston. A new install brings the whole attic up to that depth.

Built Before 2000 and Never Re-Insulated

Many Houston homes from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s were insulated to around R-19 or R-30, well below today’s R-49 recommendation. Unless someone has added insulation since then, your attic is likely still at that original level.

Ductwork Sweating in the Attic

Houston’s Gulf humidity condenses on cold supply ducts running through a hot attic, and the dripping water soaks the insulation below and starts mold. We check duct wrap and seals before every install and flag anything that needs repair, so your new insulation doesn’t get soaked.

Sealed, Filled and Ready for Summer

How We Install Attic Insulation in Houston Homes

01
Measure what is actually there
We measure existing depth in several places rather than one, because settling is uneven, and we calculate the square footage and the target depth for your R-value.
02
Clear or clean the deck
If the old material is contaminated it comes out first. If it is sound and simply thin, we clean and level it and install over the top — and we will say which one applies.
03
Seal the leaks you cannot see later
Top-plate gaps, recessed-light penetrations and open chases get addressed before insulation goes down. Once it is covered, this work becomes far more expensive to do.
04
Install to a marked depth
Depth rulers are set across the attic and blown-in insulation is installed to that line, so the coverage is verifiable rather than a claim. Baffles keep soffit vents clear.
05
Photograph and hand over
You get photographs of the finished depth against the markers, the bag count, and the coverage chart — the documentation an inspector or a future buyer will ask for.

Amazing service and Mori was the guy! It is a pleasure to be served by such professionals. I was going to get three bids and they were the second one I called. They asked when they could come and do they estimate and I said how about right now. Even though it was Saturday they came right out and Mori and his team did a very through evaluation and explained in detail what they would do. I asked when they could do the work, and they said can we do it now? I decided not to pursue the other two bids, and to my surprise they had the equipment and crew there and did the job all in the same day! It is a pleasure doing business with people like this. 5 stars all the way. We had a pretty neglected system that clearly hadn’t been cleaned in a long time (if EVER!!!), and these guys did an awesome job getting everything back in shape. Omri was the lead on our crew and he was fantastic. Very professional, super knowledgeable, and took the time to walk me through everything they were doing. You could tell they really cared about doing it right. No pressure, no upsells. Just solid, honest work. Highly recommend if your system needs a deep clean.

Thanks for the quick turnaround work. My AC and furnace unit was pretty dirty as previous tenant was very messy. Plus he had smoked inside house causing cigarette odor to contaminate unit. Crew came out and did a thorough clean up over a a span of 3-4hours. Before and after photos were night and day difference. Update: Company charges extra for use of credit card which was an additional $75.80 with final bill $1970.80. Attempting to pay with the credit card initially failed. Thinking there may be issue with card I used another card. Later I came to realize that I was double charged on two different credit card; however, what annoyed me was somehow the first bill was lot higher than anticipated ($1,989.75). Now I have to go fight to get the extra charge removed. While the work is commendable, the billing practice is questionable. Update: Jasmine was great to follow up on this issue and was able to get the extraneous charge reversed.

Houston Attic Insulation FAQs: R-Value, Savings, Humidity & What Hides Up There

What R-value does a Houston attic need?

Houston is in climate zone 2, where ENERGY STAR recommends R-30 to R-60 in the attic. We install to R-49 by default, which matches current code for new construction. With blown fiberglass, R-49 is about 19 to 20 inches of settled depth. Cellulose reaches it with less depth because it has a higher R-value per inch.

Blown-in is usually the better choice. It fills gaps around trusses, wiring, and the ductwork that runs through most Houston attics. Batts leave seams and voids that let 140°F summer attic heat through. Batts still work well in open, easy-to-reach spans and knee walls.

Blown fiberglass doesn't absorb moisture, and it won't feed mold or attract pests. That makes it our usual pick for Houston's humid attics. Cellulose insulates well per inch, but it can clump and hold water after a roof leak. We'll walk you through both on site.

On a July afternoon, a poorly insulated Houston attic can reach 130 to 150°F. That heat radiates down through the ceiling and warms the ductwork, and your AC runs harder to make up for both.

Probably very little. Many ranch homes in Sharpstown, Meyerland, Oak Forest, and Spring Branch still have their original insulation. After 60 or more years, it has often packed down to a few inches, well below R-30. We measure the actual depth during the inspection so you know exactly where you stand.

It depends on your starting depth, air leaks, and AC condition, so we won't promise a number. ENERGY STAR estimates that air sealing plus added attic insulation saves homeowners an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs. The biggest gains usually come in older homes starting below R-19.

Four things drive most of the price: attic square footage, the target R-value, whether old insulation has to come out, and how easy the attic is to access. Removal adds the most cost. That's why we check for rodent, water, and mold damage before quoting, so the price you see is the price you pay.

Most top-up jobs take a single day. A full removal and reinstall usually takes one to two days, depending on attic size. In summer we start early in the morning, before the attic reaches peak heat.

Any time works. Spring is the smartest time, so the attic is ready before summer cooling bills peak. Fall is also good, because it lets you fix storm damage from hurricane season before winter.

Not always. If it's dry, clean, and pest-free, we can blow new insulation over it. We remove it when we find roof rat droppings, water stains from roof leaks, mold, or insulation that's badly compressed. Adding new material on top of any of those only buries the problem.

Yes. Roof rats are common in Houston attics, especially under oak and pecan canopies. They tunnel through insulation, flatten it, and leave droppings and urine behind. Our Attic Cleaning service removes the contaminated material and sanitizes the space before new insulation goes in.

If it got wet, it most likely is. Wet insulation loses most of its R-value and can grow mold within 24 to 48 hours in Houston heat. Drying it out doesn't restore it. We remove it, check the decking and framing for mold, and reinsulate.

No. Moldy insulation has to be removed. Our Mold Remediation service contains the area, removes affected material, and treats the wood surfaces. After that, the attic is ready for fresh insulation.

It matters a lot. Your cooled air travels through ducts sitting in a 140°F space. Leaky or poorly insulated ducts pull hot, dusty attic air into your system, and they pull insulation fibers in too. If your vents blow dust or your bills stay high after insulating, Air Duct Cleaning is the next step.

Before is better, or on the same visit. Removal and install stir up dust, and you don't want it recirculating through dirty ducts. Scheduling Air Duct Cleaning with your insulation job handles both at once.

Not with proper installation. We install baffles at the soffits so blown insulation doesn't cover your intake vents. That keeps air moving through the attic, which Houston roofs need to shed heat and moisture.

No. Blown insulation feeds through a hose from our truck to the attic access. We cover floors and the hatch opening, and we clean up before we leave.

Houston Attic Services: Insulation, Cleaning, Ducts & Mold

In a Houston attic, problems rarely show up alone. Summer heat above 140°F cooks your ductwork, roof rats flatten insulation, and storm leaks leave wet material that turns to mold. A dryer vent that’s come loose can soak everything around it. We handle all of it in one visit, so you’re not calling three companies to fix one space.

Learn Your Attic Before Houston's Heat, Storms & Humidity Test It

These guides go deeper than our FAQs. Learn how to check your insulation depth, what storm leaks leave behind, and why ducts in a 140°F attic pull dust into your home. There’s also a guide on when a 1960s ranch attic needs a full cleanout instead of a top-up. Each one is written for Houston homes, in simple terms, with no sales pitch.
