ATTIC INSULATION SPECIALISTS

Why Most Houston Attics Are Under-Insulated

Attic insulation is the single highest-return efficiency job on a typical Houston house — and the one most often done wrong. Houston sits in climate zone 2, where the Department of Energy recommends R-30 to R-60, and the 2021 energy code calls for R-49. A large share of the attics we open fall well below that. But the reason matters: an attic that’s simply settled over time needs a different fix than one that’s wet, compressed, or full of rodent droppings.

That’s why we measure before we quote. Your attic can hit 130°F on an August afternoon, sitting directly above your conditioned rooms. The difference between insulation that’s genuinely at depth and insulation that merely looks present is money leaving through your ceiling every hour the AC runs.

There are really four jobs covered on this page, and most homes only need one — not all four. Below, we break down how to tell which one applies to your attic, what each one costs you in comfort and energy bills over time, and where insulation stops being the answer. Burying a leaking duct or a bath fan vented into the attic under fresh insulation is exactly how a “good” insulation job still fails to lower your bill.

Know the Signs

Which Attic Insulation Job Do You Actually Need?

These four cover nearly every Houston attic we inspect. The walkthrough below tells you which one applies to yours before you spend a dollar.

Top-Up: Settled but Still Clean

Blown insulation in Houston attics compacts over the years under 140°F summer heat and repeated AC service visits. If yours is dry, clean, and pest-free, we level what’s there and add new material up to the depth markers we set on the trusses. It’s the least invasive fix and usually the lowest-cost option.

Repair: Gaps From Ductwork and Storage

Insulation gets pushed aside when an HVAC tech swaps a coil or reroutes a duct. It gets flattened under holiday boxes and scraped thin around the attic hatch. We rebuild those bare spots so your whole ceiling is covered again, with no full tear-out.

Remove and Replace: Soaked, Moldy, or Pest-Soiled

Some insulation can’t be topped up: material soaked by a storm-damaged roof or a burst attic pipe, stained by smoke, growing mold in Gulf Coast humidity, or fouled by the roof rats common in Houston attics. We vacuum it out under containment, sanitize the surfaces, and then install fresh material.

Full Install: Little or No Insulation Left

This is common in 1950s and ’60s ranch homes and in attics that were never re-insulated after a roof or HVAC job. We blow in a complete layer to R-49, about 14 to 18 inches depending on material. That’s the level DOE recommends as a starting point for Houston’s Climate Zone 2.

Upstairs Hot, Downstairs Comfortable

This is the classic Houston two-story complaint, especially in game rooms and bedrooms over the garage. Often the ceiling above those rooms is under-insulated, and the AC isn’t actually too small. We check your attic depth before you spend money on a bigger unit.

Joist Tops Visible Above the Insulation

Many older Houston homes have 2×6 ceiling joists, about 5½ inches deep. If you can see their tops, your insulation is well under half the R-49 depth recommended for our climate.

From First Look to Sealed Tight

How We Clean Up and Rodent-Proof Your Houston Attic

01
Inspect and measure
We measure existing depth in several places rather than one, check for moisture, rodent activity and disturbed coverage, and photograph what we find so you can see it yourself.
02
Tell you which job it is
Top-up, repair, removal or full install — with the reasoning. If your attic only needs the cheapest of those, that is what we quote.
03
Fix what insulation would otherwise bury
Top-plate gaps, recessed-light penetrations, disconnected ducts and bath fans venting into the attic get addressed first. Once they are covered they are far more expensive to reach.
04
Remove or level, then install to a marked depth
Contaminated material comes out under containment. Depth rulers are set across the attic and blown-in insulation is installed to that line, with baffles keeping the soffit vents clear.
05
Photograph and hand over
Photographs of finished depth against the markers, the bag count and the coverage chart — the documentation an inspector or a future buyer will ask for.
No Surprises Once We're Up There

Amazing service and Mori was the guy! It is a pleasure to be served by such professionals. I was going to get three bids and they were the second one I called. They asked when they could come and do they estimate and I said how about right now. Even though it was Saturday they came right out and Mori and his team did a very through evaluation and explained in detail what they would do. I asked when they could do the work, and they said can we do it now? I decided not to pursue the other two bids, and to my surprise they had the equipment and crew there and did the job all in the same day! It is a pleasure doing business with people like this. 5 stars all the way. We had a pretty neglected system that clearly hadn’t been cleaned in a long time (if EVER!!!), and these guys did an awesome job getting everything back in shape. Omri was the lead on our crew and he was fantastic. Very professional, super knowledgeable, and took the time to walk me through everything they were doing. You could tell they really cared about doing it right. No pressure, no upsells. Just solid, honest work. Highly recommend if your system needs a deep clean.

Thanks for the quick turnaround work. My AC and furnace unit was pretty dirty as previous tenant was very messy. Plus he had smoked inside house causing cigarette odor to contaminate unit. Crew came out and did a thorough clean up over a a span of 3-4hours. Before and after photos were night and day difference. Update: Company charges extra for use of credit card which was an additional $75.80 with final bill $1970.80. Attempting to pay with the credit card initially failed. Thinking there may be issue with card I used another card. Later I came to realize that I was double charged on two different credit card; however, what annoyed me was somehow the first bill was lot higher than anticipated ($1,989.75). Now I have to go fight to get the extra charge removed. While the work is commendable, the billing practice is questionable. Update: Jasmine was great to follow up on this issue and was able to get the extraneous charge reversed.

Omri and his team were very thorough and professional. The pricing was very fair and they were punctual and completed the work in the time they said it would take (a little less than 3 hours for the two systems).

Attic Insulation in Houston — FAQ

Not always — see the duct and vent questions below. Insulation depth is one part of the system; leaking ducts or blocked vents in the same attic can undo the savings.

Houston is in climate zone 2. The Department of Energy recommends R-30 to R-60, and the 2021 energy code calls for R-49 in new construction — R-49 is the number we build to unless you ask otherwise. In blown fiberglass that is roughly 19 to 20 inches of settled depth.

Often, yes. If the material is dry and clean but has been pushed aside by someone working on ducts, compressed under storage, or is missing in patches, restoring and topping up the coverage is legitimate and much cheaper than replacement. Replacement is for insulation that is wet, smoke-damaged, mold-affected or rodent-soiled.

Not always. Dry, clean, rodent-free insulation can be levelled and installed over. Removal is necessary when there is moisture, contamination, smoke or mold. We show you attic photographs so you can see which case yours is rather than taking our word for it.

A typical Houston single-family attic is a one-day job. If removal is part of the project, plan on one to two days in total. You get the schedule with the quote.

It is usually the largest single improvement, but not always the whole answer. If your ducts are leaking into the attic, or a bath fan is venting up there, insulation alone will underperform. We check for those during the inspection and tell you before covering them.

CenterPoint Energy periodically offers residential insulation rebates, but amounts and eligibility change by year and fuel type. We’ll tell you what’s currently available when we quote your job.

Spring, ideally — before peak summer heat so you’re not paying to cool an attic that’s already underperforming. That said, we work year-round, since both heat-driven inefficiency and humidity-driven moisture problems happen regardless of season.

Yes. Humidity can compress and mat certain insulation types over time and creates the conditions for mold growth if moisture gets trapped — part of why we inspect for wet or contaminated material before quoting, not just depth.

Contaminated insulation has to be fully removed under containment before new material goes in. We’ll flag it and walk you through the removal-and-replace process rather than insulating over it.

We don’t insulate over mold. If we find active growth, that needs to be addressed first — our Mold Remediation and HVAC Mold Removal teams handle that, and we can coordinate both jobs together.

This is one of the most common reasons a “good” insulation job still doesn’t lower a bill. If we find a leaking or disconnected duct during inspection, we’ll show you exactly where, and our Air Duct Cleaning team can repair or reseal it as part of the same visit.

It can, if the vent run passes through the attic and gets buried, kinked, or disconnected during old-insulation removal. We check dryer vent routing as part of the inspection and can service it through our Dryer Vent Cleaning team if needed.

Our techs work off attic decking or walk boards, not directly on ceiling joists or ductwork, to avoid ceiling damage or crushed insulation elsewhere in the attic.

Not always on its own. Insulation, duct sealing, and proper attic ventilation all affect your bill together, which is why we check the whole system — not just insulation depth — before quoting.
